Linking Artistry of Wetlands with Water Supply and Treatment

  • The Physics Room 49-59 Worcester Boulevard Christchurch New Zealand (map)

A public talk by Dr Aisling O’Sullivan, Senior Lecturer/Ecological Engineer at University of Canterbury featured at The Physics Rooms as part of their public programme around A Wandering Thing.

The show presents new work by Sophie Bannan and Josh Harris-Harding whose individual bodies of work are tied together by shared research trajectories. The artists’ lines of inquiry and research interests are distinct but converge in a way that broadens the working context of the other.

The exhibition explores ideas about the relationship between culture and nature, specifically water. Sophie deals a lot with memory, space and identity - using film and photography, whereas Josh approaches it using 3 video works that approach the concept from various angles and aesthetics - from corporate to dramatic.

The talk is about the nuts and bolts or practicalities of water - its management and treatment. Ash will cover the practicalities and methods of waste water treatment and show how constructed wetlands are an ideal counterpoint to the intuitive and abstract approach taken by the artists in the show.
